Why You Should Choose Natural Beauty Products

As a mom, I spend a lot of time with the kids, especially with their aftercare whenever we’re back from an outdoor activity. Because I want to protect their sensitive skin, I always try to find the most natural and gentlest products for them. Doing this can be quite tedious at times, especially with how accustomed we have become to using products that are synthetic and chemical-filled. But once I started sourcing natural products for my kids, I also began incorporating them into my beauty routine. Now, my collection includes natural cosmetics, cleansers, soaps, shampoossunscreen... Everything’s just better au naturale

Once you understand the range of benefits that natural products bring (just like I did after doing my own research!), you’ll probably never want to revert to your old ways too.

Safer and better for your body

Natural beauty products are filled with tons of beneficial nutrients derived from vitamins and compounds like Vitamin C and D or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that promote collagen, blood flow and replenish your skin. These help boost your body, unlike the detrimental effects of synthetic products which contain potentially harmful ingredients like Triclosan and Glyceryl Stearate. By forgoing chemicals that could have long-term negative effects on your skin, you’re protecting your body from future harm and simply using natural ingredients that can only work for you, instead of against you. I’ve noticed a big difference in the texture of my own skin since switching to natural products; when I used products with additives like sulfates and parabens, I realised that my skin was still very irritated even though these ingredients are supposed to serve as foamers or fillers. Now, my skin is a lot calmer and more relaxed, which is what I need after a long day of work!

More soothing for your skin

You might have found yourself in situations where you’ve applied a skincare product on your face, only to discover a breakout the next day! That’s probably because the product you used contained chemicals that are overly harsh when applied directly on your body, especially if it is sensitive. Natural beauty products, on the other hand, don’t contain chemicals, fillers, or artificial colouring that could aggravate your skin. These products also usually use natural preservatives like salts, sugars, honey or grapefruit seed extract which not only smell good, but also soothe and calm any irritants.

Friendlier to animals

Despite animal rights concerns today, many big brands in the beauty industry continue to test their products on animals. However, the manufacturers of many natural products usually choose to forgo animal testing. While this is not to say that all natural products are necessarily cruelty-free, it is more likely that a company which prioritises natural products would also ensure the humane treatment of animals.

Friendlier to the environment

Natural beauty products are usually farmed and manufactured organically, which means that less chemicals seep into the environment and damage ecosystems. They also don’t contain ingredients like aluminium and lead that require mining, so this eliminates any processing steps that may generate large amounts of pollution. Since they don’t contain petrochemicals, natural beauty products are also usually biodegradable, which helps our planet. Switching to natural soap bars also reduces the amount of plastic packaging you use and lowers your carbon footprint. So if you’re looking for new ways to help with conservation, do the environment a favour by buying natural skincare products instead!

Choosing natural beauty products means choosing yourself. You control the types of products you put into your body, so why pick something that is not only detrimental to your health in the short-term, but also harmful in the long-run with the pollution that it brings to our environment?
