Reasons to Go to Tasmania For Every Type of Traveller

Reasons to Go to Tasmania For Every Type of Traveller

Tasmania is an underrated gem that few people have thought of venturing to. Many people might wonder what there is to do there, and whether or not it is worth the hassle of taking two flights to get there (since currently there aren’t any direct flights from Singapore). A recent trip there showed me how much there is to do on this not-so-little island, and regardless of what kind of traveller you are, it is easy to find something you love about this charming place.

For the Foodie

I was chatting with a friend about my trip and he exclaimed, “It is impossible to have a bad meal in Tasmania!” I couldn’t agree more. You might think that Melbourne or Sydney would have the best food in Australia with the plethora of cafes and international cuisines, but it comes as no surprise that Tasmania tops it all when it comes to the freshest produce and cooking that brings out the natural flavours of the food. And the Tasmanians are proud to showcase it! Let your taste buds travel through the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail, where you can delight in produce ranging from honey and fruit to oysters and truffles.

For The Wine Connoisseur

Other than food, you can also sample wine to your hearts’ content at the numerous cellar door wine tastings throughout Tasmania. There are vineyard clusters spanning from the North to the South of the island, and you usually don’t have to drive too far to gain access to one of these regions. Due to the cooler climate, the grapes yield delightfully crisp white wines and Pinot Noir, if you prefer red wines. We had some of the best food at the restaurants on the vineyards, and you can be sure that the wine pairing will be on point. If you favour something bubbly, or more mellow, Tasmania produces its own beers, ciders and whiskeys too.

For The Fitness Junkie

Probably one of the most attractive features of Tasmania is its breath-taking mountains, and what better way to soak in its beauty (and fresh air) than to explore one of its hiking trails set against a stunning backdrop. The diverse landscape of Tasmania provides a range of trekking options for all levels of hikers – whether you’re looking for an easy one-hour stroll with children in tow, or a day-trip across challenging terrains for the experienced trekker.

Beach-lovers will be spoilt for choice with the variety of coastlines that Tasmania offers. From long stretches of white sandy beaches at Wineglass Bay, to more rugged rocky beaches which are more commonly found across the island, there are no lack of options for you to relax with the therapeutic sound of crashing waves around you. One of the most beautiful sunrises (if you can wake up for it) is said to be found at the Bay of Fires on the east coast of Tasmania – named for its striking orange-hued granite that reflect the rays of sunlight as the sun emerges from the horizon.

For The Wildlife Lover

And finally, for those who need to entertain the little ones, or if you simply love animals, you can’t miss those Tassie Devils of course! Learn more about these intelligent creatures during the feeding times at Natureworld, or try your hand at feeding - not the Tasmanian Devils - animals like wallabies, kangaroos, emus and more. Some of the kangaroos roam free within the park, and it’s such a joy spending time amongst them.

So, there you are! 5 experiences to check out while you’re in Tasmania. And I believe there is much more untouched beauty that this island has to offer.
