Best Swimwear for Mums in Singapore: 9 Styles That Survive a Pool Day
By Toni, Founder and Creative Director, August Society. Updated 5 October 2026.
If you've ever stood waist deep in a condo pool while a soaking wet four year old launches himself at you from the edge, you already know the real test of a swimsuit. He lands, wraps his arms around your neck, grabs a fistful of strap and pulls. And for one long second you're not thinking about him at all. You're thinking about what's happening to your top.
I've lived in Singapore for eighteen years, and for the last ten I've been designing swimwear for mums here and across the region. That moment, the jump and the grab, is still the first thing I picture when we're fitting a new style. I don't care how a suit looks on the hanger. I care whether it's still where you left it after your kids have used you as a climbing frame for an hour.
For a long time I owned one swim suit. A black one piece I bought because it seemed sensible. I spent every Saturday swim lesson hoisting the straps back up and quietly fishing it out of places it shouldn't have been, and I never once felt like myself in it, even on holiday. When I finally bought something made properly, I forgot I was wearing it. Honestly, that's the best compliment a swimsuit can get.

What makes good swimwear for mums in Singapore?
We don't swim the way people do on a European summer holiday. We swim all year, in heat that doesn't let up, usually in chlorine, often several times a week. The sun at noon is no joke. And a pool day here almost never ends at the pool. It rolls into lunch, a supermarket run, the playground, sometimes a hawker centre with your hair still dripping.
So before I even look at the print, I ask a few things of any swimsuit. When a child jumps into my arms and hangs off the straps, does it stay put? Does it give me UV protection, or am I relying on sunscreen I'll forget to reapply? Can I chase a kid across the sand at Tanjong Beach without stopping to pull a wedgie out? Will it still look the same after three months of chlorine? Is it dry enough to sit in a Grab afterwards? And can I throw something over it and go straight to lunch?
If a piece can say yes to all of that, it stays in my drawer. These nine all can.
Which swimwear styles actually survive a pool day?
1. A one piece that doesn't budge
This is the one I wear most. You want straps that sit firmly on your shoulders and stay there when someone small is tugging on them, and a back that doesn't gape every time you bend down for a dropped goggle. Our Costa Brava was made for exactly those mornings: swim lesson at nine, back in the pool at four, and you only got dressed once.
2. A high waist bikini that covers you at the back
A bikini really doesn't have to mean spending the afternoon adjusting. A high waist bottom with proper coverage behind means you can run, squat and climb out of the pool without reaching round to fix anything. You also get to swap tops across a holiday, which makes packing a lot easier.
3. Swim shorts over everything
If you only take one tip from this list, take this one. Pull a pair of swim shorts over your one piece or bikini and you'll move completely differently. You sit on the edge, kneel in the sand to dig a moat, go up the playground ladder after the little one who's stuck at the top. Our BC Shorts dry quickly enough that by the time you're at the café, nobody knows you were swimming.
4. A bikini top that holds up under pressure
Triangle tops are lovely for lying on a lounger. They're less lovely when a toddler grabs one and pulls. Look for wider straps, a band with real support, and a shape that was built for picking people up rather than lying still.
5. A tankini for the days you want options
A tankini gives you the coverage of a one piece and the practicality of two pieces. That matters more than anyone admits the first time you need the toilet in a wet swimsuit while someone waits outside the cubicle asking if you're done yet.
6. Long sleeves for the midday sun
If your family swims between eleven and three, a long sleeve top with UPF protection does a lot of the work that sunscreen can't. Put it on once and that's your shoulders and back covered, which is one less thing to remember while you're slathering everyone else. Have a look at our rash guards for women if you're out in the sun at the worst time of day.
7. A reversible piece for the suitcase
When you're packing for four, everything has to work twice. A reversible swimsuit gives you two looks in the space of one, and it's always the first thing in my bag for Bintan or Phuket.
8. Matching swimwear with the kids
I won't pretend this one is practical. It's about the photo. In ten years you won't remember what anyone was wearing, but you'll have that picture of all of you in the same print, sandy and squinting, somewhere in Phuket. Do it while they still let you. Our family matching swimwear comes in sizes for the whole crew.
9. Beachwear you can go to lunch in
The best pool days end with a lunch nobody planned. A cover up, a shirt or a light dress that actually looks like an outfit means you never have to choose between one more swim and keeping the booking. Good beachwear is what turns a morning at the pool into a whole day out.
Should you choose a bikini or a one piece?
I'd say both, but it really depends on the day you're having.
On swim lesson mornings, or any day I know I'll be in and out of the water lifting, catching and chasing, I wear a one piece. The bikini comes out on holiday, or on the rare afternoon when I might get twenty minutes on a lounger with a book before someone needs a snack.
If you're buying just one this year, start with the one piece and add swim shorts. Those two will get you through almost anything a Singapore family can throw at you.
How many swimsuits does a mum actually need?
Fewer than you'd think. I keep two at home in rotation, so one is always dry, and one that only comes out on holiday so it still feels a bit special when I unpack it.
That's the thinking behind everything we make: buy less, buy better. One swimsuit that's still going strong after a few seasons of chlorine is worth more than three that have gone saggy by October. When you're browsing our women's swimwear collection, choose the piece you'll reach for every week rather than the one you'll wear once and forget.

Frequently asked questions
What swimwear is best for swim lessons with kids?
A one piece, or a high waist bikini with swim shorts on top. You'll be crouching, lifting and getting in and out of the water all session, so you want something that stays where it is without you fiddling with it.
Do bathing suits last in Singapore condo pools?
Good ones do, if you look after them. Chlorine eats through cheaper fabrics quickly. Rinse your swimsuit in cool fresh water as soon as you're out, and dry it flat in the shade rather than in direct sun.
Can I wear a bikini to my child's swim school?
Of course. Plenty of mums wear a high waist bikini with a supportive top, or add swim shorts for extra coverage when they're sitting on the pool edge.
What should I wear over my swimsuit to lunch?
A light shirt, a cover up, or swim shorts over a one piece. Pick beachwear that works as an outfit on its own, so you can walk straight from the pool to the table.
