How to Heat-Proof Your Makeup

No more cake face! Get your make-up routine ready for the heat and humidity of summer...

August Society Heatproof Makeup

We rejoice in endless summer here at August Society, though living on the equator means we’re constantly dealing with hot sun and humidity. Sweaty, melting makeup is not flattering on anyone and can just be a big old pain in the butt. Whether you live in a tropical climate like we do or are getting ready for your next vacation, you and your makeup don’t have to suffer. Here’s how:

1- Start with a good SPF

Wrinkles and sun damage are never a good look, and the only way to minimize them is prevention. I never leave the house without using an SPF on my face protecting against UVA / UVB rays. Don’t forget to shield you lips with an SPF lip balm too.

2- Use a primer

To ensure your makeup lasts all day, prep with a silicone-based primer before putting on your foundation. Though it seems counter intuitive to add an extra layer, this will fill in the nooks and crannies on your face, act as a barrier between humidity and your skin, and provide a base for the rest of your makeup to stick to. How to tell if a product is silicone based? Look at the ingredients list and see if any of the first five contain words ending in -cone/-methicone and –siloxane (e.g. Dimethicone, Trisiloxane).

3- Keep the layers as thin as possible

Use a silicone-based foundation sparingly. As with the primer, silicone-based products are the secret to long lasting wear in a humid climate. Dab on some waterproof concealer only in the places you really need it. Note: make sure that you wash your face very well before going to bed. Silicone-based products act as a sealant so you don’t want any dirt or oil trapped under your makeup to stay there.

4- Wear sheer cream eye shadow and blush

Sheer cream products stay in place better than the cakey powder versions and look dewy and natural even when you break a sweat. Don't want to carry around so many products? Your lipstick can double as a cream blush - just dab some on and rub in to blend. Or skip the blush and just dust on a bit of bronzer for that sun-kissed glow.

Eye Makeup

5- Pick water proof eyeliners and mascaras

Banish those raccoon eyes! Use eyeliner sparingly and waterproof mascara on the top lashes only.

6- Trade in lipstick for lip gloss

Pass on the heavy, caked on lipstick when temperature goes up. Sheer lip gloss is more appropriate for hot weather and versatile while you’re roaming around on vacation.

Makeup powder

7- Control shine

After finishing up your makeup, take a large powder brush and dust a thin coat of translucent powder over your face to set everything and absorb moisture. Throughout the day, use blotting papers to keep sweat and shine under control. Don’t use more power, as it will just end up looking thick and piled-on.

Or, just skip the makeup and go with a light tinted moisturizer with SPF. It’s summer, let loose a little!
